Introducing Fluid Power to Younger Students Is One Way to Stave Off Extinction
September 2009. Today’s Fluid Power. Fluid’s Future.
Fluid power isn’t sexy. That’s the conclusion the international fluid power industry came to in 2007 as the reason why there is a shortage of people with fluid power skills influencing design decisions regarding which motion control technologies to use. The fluid power industry isn’t the only industry seeing this image problem. It’s a systemic crisis that permeates the entire US culture.
“The piece is great… I really think this will get people talking/thinking.”

State of the Fluid Power Industry
5 July 2009. Valve Magazine. Valve Industry Blog.
In an article posted on June 3, “An Upside to the Downturn,” I mentioned a piece by Jeff Klingberg, President/CEO, Mountain Stream Group, Inc. in Product Design & Development entitled “Wake Up Fluid Power Industry Or Prepare For Extinction.” In that article Klingberg suggested electric actuators are making strong inroads into the U.S. fluid power industry largely because that industry has failed to embrace new technology. Environmental considerations (leaking and spilled hydraulic fluid) and energy conservation are the chief drivers, he said.

Wake Up Fluid Power Industry Or Prepare For Extinction
23 June 2009. Product Design & Development. Design Daily News. At Issue.
As a person who worked in the industry for 10 years and has provided consulting services to the industry for the past 16 years, I believe it is—especially in the United States. And, if they don’t wake up immediately, they’ll find themselves in the history books and museums alongside dinosaurs—extinct.
An Upside to the Downturn?
3 June 2009. Valve Magazine.
Another piece in PD&D, this one by Jeff Klingberg, President/CEO, Mountain Stream Group, Inc. and entitled Wake Up Fluid Power Industry Or Prepare For Extinction, postulated that the U.S. fluid power industry (hydraulics and pneumatics) was being squeezed out by electric actuation, driven to a large extent by failure to embrace new technology. Environmental regulations have made conventional hydraulic fluid problematical, and energy conservation has eaten into the market for pneumatics (there’s still a lot of inefficient compressed air equipment out there).
